BOX OF APPLES

Apple season in Menan, Idaho

My sisters decided to let me in on their annual applesauce canning madness. We canned 70 quarts of applesauce, started by picking the apples in an orchard near my sister's home.

Then dragging the boxes to her home.

Boiling the apples.

Putting the thing through a hand-cranked contraption and getting lots of hot, pink sticky applesauce all over the place and all over her children.

I HAD to experiment... used tomatoes in a few batches... tasted okay. And then used raspberries in a few more batches... The raspberry applesauce didn't seal right. I wound up eating it early and throwing away one quart.

Breakfast with friends

September at Toni's house, we convened with applesause, berries and pumpkin filling to slather on German pancakes. Nothing better than breakfast!
