Yes, maybe 100 years ago it was easy. But for security reasons, it is highly unlikely volunteers would be allowed to care for the garden - something that Roger I believe is hoping.

It is too much of a security risk to allow people to come in and potentially poison the plants and soil. Trust me, I know first hand because my husband is involved in some of the White House security. To maintain a 1 acre garden (may I remind you that is no way reflective of what the average american family can do, most don't have that kind of land) would take several gardeners and additional kitchen help who have gone through the security clearance, which can take up to a year to get. It will cost nearly $500,000 to run this garden Roger proposes. And that ain't too Green is it?

What is Green is to support a small family garden just like what Roger planted and what most Americans can handle - something MANAGEABLE! Something Michele and the girls can enjoy and be rewarded by. That $500,000 could be spent aquiring produce and meat from the Maryland farmers who live 3-25 miles from the White House. ANd trust me, it won't cost THAT much. ALL the food for ALL the dinners and parties could be supplied by local farmers...MY NEIGHBORS.Mom/CEO (Chief Everything Officer)https://www.blogger.com/profile/07090936638331551970noreply@blogger.com
